[ Following orders that weren't issued from Kira's village leader was a foreign concept to him. Asato still isn't sure that these are orders he wants to follow, but he's had little reason to believe that his life was in any sort of danger. He was a creature that kept to himself, but there was something that resonated with him about the wyrmlings-- offspring left without their parents. It rang a bit close to home.
He's found his way to the cave with relative ease. He's used to navigating unknown territory, relying on his sense of navigation. He moves discreetly enough that he doesn't attract trouble. Not until he reaches the mouth of the cave, that is. Now that he's here, he's acutely aware that he isn't alone, the scent of someone else reaching his nose and making his fur stand on end. It isn't a familiar scent, for one, and definitely not another ribika. He follows the trail, and once he spots the source, keeps himself hidden behind a mass of vegetation.
He may have stayed hidden as long as he wanted, too, if it weren't for the misstep he takes in stepping on a particularly loud leaf. ]
[ Levi has developed some altruistic tendencies in recent years. but if it comes down to helping in interuniversal affairs—a concept itself that he can't make heads or tails of—over directing that sense of altruism where it actually belongs, he's not nearly prepared to be so selfless. nonetheless, from what he's learned from the supposed promises of completing favors for a swift return, he can see he'll need time to gauge his employers' intentions. there's acting rash for the sake of pressuring himself along sooner, and there's threatening strangers in the crux of some freaky and poorly explained occurrence like this. there's nothing he can rely on for certain, one way or the other.
that's why he chooses to play it safe. there's a call for the rescue of orphaned creatures, "dragons" or so they said. future destroyers, children of the ugly corpse that had terrorized this town for too long. conceptually, he can't say that he likes it. but be that as it may, he's choosing to assist a species responsible for human destruction. he's choosing to tentatively accept this job. he just hopes that he won't come to regret it.
currently, fulfilling the job has him knee deep in a maze-like cave, beside someone else unfortunate enough to receive the same order. they'd hunkered down with the torch they'd managed to light somewhere in the pits. right about now, they've corned a wyrmling. a very scared, very defensive wyrmling.
Levi doesn't try to put his hands on it just yet. ]
One of us is going to have to find a way to stash this thing.
[ To his credit, for a guy in a school uniform he seems largely disaffected by the little dragon ahead of them. But it's not really altruism that's brought him here, either. Last he checked, he never signed up for this job, and while the moral consequences are troubling...
Well. That's nothing new, either.
But he's about as well-equipped as some punk kid getting out of classes for the day might be, and that's a more immediate problem. He passes Levi what he's got for the task: a briefcase bag. ]
I'll grab it.
[ Or Levi can, whichever. But he figures he doesn't want to risk losing a few fingers in the process. ]
[ a student, huh? besides that he's young, Levi can't tell the difference. all that matters is that they're able to cooperate their way into kidnapping this thing. which, for now, depends on keeping it alive and hidden until they're out of the cave and out of the village.
he takes the bag as it's handed to him without objection. probably better this way. if Doumeki holds onto it, he should be free to keep them clear of any disturbances.
[ They probably don't have their brand of uniform in German dungeon world, and Doumeki's good at seeming more like a priest than a schookid some days. This isn't really part of the average high school curriculum, but somehow dragon-wrangling doesn't feel so different from trying to corner a ghost.
...Particularly in that it's kind of dangerous and probably not a great idea to begin with. Still, he's calm, nodding without looking over before he moves towards the little wyrmling.
And despite the plan, he approaches it without rushing, no sudden movements. Just a hand extended casually, held a little distance away as though a peace offering; brusque as he might be, seems like he wasn't planning on just grabbing the terrified lizard and throwing it at Levi. The baby dragon twitches, coiling in around itself for a moment before nipping at his hand. Doumeki curls his fingers and avoids it without incident, but he's got a little frown now. ]
[ it seems like he's handling himself well enough, anyway. he hasn't come in here looking too bloody terrified to get his hands dirty, and Levi respects that well enough. on the other hand, he didn't expect for Doumeki to be so gentle in his attempts at wrangling the dragon. if it were him, he would have plopped the thing in the sack so that it wouldn't have as much of a chance to burn him.
admittedly, even after he'd told him to be quick, there's potentially some benefit to taking his time like this if he can get the animal to trust him. they're not baby titans, sure, but Levi was hasty in judging them for their destruction back in town. whatever the reason was for them doing this in terms of their employers, it couldn't possibly be good, right? still, it's an infant.
he watches Doumeki's attempts to tame it silently at first, brows drawn inward. the bag is still held out in his hands, but he's not making the efforts to force it in just yet. ]
What do these things even eat? [ well, they're probably carnivores, but... ] Sorry. He's gonna have to go hungry.
[ He's taken a few (mostly bullshit spirit) punches, but he's not typically one for violence. Whatever problems that causes down the road... at least it'd help him not lose a perfectly good briefcase today.
And Levi's not rushing him, at least. Food, great unifier that it is, isn't going to help them this time; this might take some patience. ]
Yeah. If that was their mom in the town, it's probably hungry. [ As well as scared, though that goes without saying. And Doumeki isn't the nurturing sort, but he's calm; the fact that neither of them are freaking out probably helps its frayed nerves. ] And stressed.
[ After another several, tense seconds, the wyrmling starts to ease up slowly, hackles lowered. Maybe it wouldn't take much manhandling on his part after all. ]
[ it's a given that this creature is going to be uncomfortable, especially if it's never been outside the nest before. unfortunately, they haven't been given an easy task, but he's got to admit that if it was easy, there's no reason for them to be doing it in the first place. gotta make the blackmail worth pulling them here worthwhile, you know?
after a few moments like this though, the wyrmling is calmer than he expected. the worst is, of course, yet to be over with. bending his knees, he leans closely behind it, gently trying to usher the lizard into the bag. ]
Go on.
[ as if it would actually understand. still, it doesn't outright start breathing fire. it grounds itself where it is, in Doumeki's arms, and appears not to want Levi to move it. probably less that it's gotten attached so fast and more that it's afraid of what he's going to do. he's able to persist enough anyway, though not without suffering a small burn to his hand as it makes a few cries of distress.
Levi's teeth are grit, but as far as he's concerned, the dragon's in the bag. success. ]
[ Doumeki's just a cheater—run-of-the-mill spirits and animals were generally pretty okay with his existence. Not that it made this particularly easy. Blasé as his reactions are, there's something about all this that doesn't sit right. There's going into stuff blind—that's just an inevitability sometimes—and there's this.
Did they need more with infant dragons than some charity act for an endangered species? Still, he focuses on looking over Levi's hands and surveying the wyrmling. Injuries to either of them seem pretty minor, though the beast itself looks a bit skittish.
[ there's plenty he's done in his life that's questionable. if it's for getting back to where he'd come from, this doesn't even come close to taking the cake as far as what he'd do. that still doesn't mean he has to like it though, and with no explicit proof that the deal is legitimate, he can't be sure if giving his all to objectives like this is really gaining him anything.
killing the mother... sure sounded like a better objective to him right now though. he's decent with animals, but that didn't make them anymore predictable. and Domeki had volunteered to grab the thing and it had left him thinking he was going to look after it. looks like he was wrong.
while he's not too happy about that, he slings the bag over his shoulder with only narrowed eyes. no use for the vertical maneuvering gear inside these damn caves anyway. ]
Listen. If any of the townspeople have gotten wind that there's a kidnapping in progress, they're definitely going to come looking for us.
[ earlier, he'd heard some noises. the last thing to do in that situation was to make a scene though. so he sticks with bringing it up now, whether or not Doumeki had also noticed. ]
